Safety is top priority for chemical companies. The installations and facilities are designed, built and maintained in such a way that they comply with (international) strict safety requirements. In addition, safety measures have been taken and safety procedures and agreements apply. A safety management system defines what every company does to ensure safety. Working on safety is a continuous process of gathering knowledge, gaining experience, learning from each other, learning from mistakes and implementing improvements. Unfortunately, it is unavoidable that local residents are sometimes bothered by operational management at the industrial park.

What is flaring?

Flaring is a process to burn gases that can not be processed in a factory. This prevents these gases from ending up in the environment.
Usually it is flared because a factory is put into operation again after being stationary, for example as a result of a maintenance shutdown. The pipes are then blown clean with gases, which are eventually burned via the flare system.

It is also possible that a factory suddenly has to be taken out of operation due to a disorder in the process. The gases that are still in the pipes are then directed towards the flare. The same happens if the gases in the factory do not meet certain quality requirements. Then they are also burned.

Until the correct operating conditions are reached, this will be accompanied by flaring. This can possibly involve several hours with light and noise disturbance. At startup, parts of the installation are also heated with steam. This may give extra noise disturbance for a short time. The extent and duration of flaring and noise may vary and depends in part on where a disruption occurs in which part of the process.
